All a Matter of Style? The 1x1 of Polo Etiquette

The little 1x1 of polo etiquette and good style for our esteemed guests. The little 1x1 of Polo Etiquette – explained by Simone Styger.

Always dressed appropriately (well)?

What should I wear when I am invited to a polo tournament? Many people ask this question, especially those guests who have never been with us in Ascona. But first, some general style rules of the sport of polo:

Should you button the top button of a polo shirt?

Regardless of the number of buttons on your polo shirt, always leave the top one or two buttons open and never open all the buttons. (Exception: ladies)

Make sure the buttons do not go beyond the top edge of your armpits.

Collar popped?

A classic in terms of style. Basically, whatever pleases is allowed. However, the collar should not be popped if you do not want to look like a show-off or simply "out of fashion".

The Preppy look is back in vogue

The Preppy style (from Preparatory Schools) is a classic and elegant style, inspired by American university sports and the Ivy League, and is back in vogue. It is characterized by neat, high-quality, and timeless basics, such as button-down shirts, chinos, cable-knit sweaters, and loafers. The look skillfully balances sporty casualness and formal elegance, generally being suitable for afternoon events. New features include more oversized cuts and unusual materials (e.g., fleece, Cool-Dry blends, etc.).

Wearing a cap with a polo shirt?

A cap can add a modern touch to simple outfits. Often worn with sporty outfits, the cap also goes well with polo shirts. But here, too, the guidelines for a successful style apply: no wild pattern mixes, no advertising, and always choose according to the occasion. For leisure time, the cap complements the sporty look of the polo shirt; official occasions or professional appointments are not suitable for the cap and polo shirt combination. Otherwise, the rule applies: a cap with a polo shirt only if it suits your type.

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

Men like to wear loafers, boat shoes, or elegant sneakers. Women opt for platforms, wedges, or flat shoes – high heels are generally discouraged during polo, although in Ascona the game is played on sand, so the classic "divot stomping" is dispensed with.

Flashy or discreet?

Should I dress in a flashy way or is it better not to stand out? In traditional tournaments, the following applies: Quiet Luxury is better, not too flashy. And for women, preferably with a hat (traditional Hat contest, this year in Ascona it will be waived).

Polo events are more elegant events, usually without a direct dress code. In Ascona, of course, it is a bit freer and you can stand out if you want.

Ascona with dress code

At our 3-day event, there will be a dress code for Friday night (party) and Saturday night (gala). On Friday, at the beach party, the dress code is "simply white". This does not represent a major challenge for most women and men – as everyone has some light-colored pieces in their wardrobe.

Welcome to the Jungle!

On Saturday night, this year's dress code is: "Welcome to the jungle!". This allows for a great deal of leeway in its implementation, and we are always surprised and delighted by the creativity with which our guests embrace the dress code.

Therefore, we have decided to create a jury for the first time, which will award the three most wonderful costumes of the night. So: whether you choose a leopard print outfit or appear as Tarzan and Jane – there are no limits to your imagination. The most important thing about a dress code: it is not a carnival party and you do not need to "dress up" in a costume, but rather adapt the theme to your personal style. Your comfort on this special night is the priority.

Etiquette

It is not just your appearance that influences your presence, but also your behavior. Therefore, here are some etiquette suggestions so that all guests, players, and staff feel comfortable:

Arrive early – before the games begin. This shows respect for the players and organizers and ensures you do not miss any of the action. Polo is a social game. Thus, the event is a great opportunity to meet new people and enjoy the company of others. Just remember how you would like to be treated. Small talk (talking to strangers) is always positive. So, say something nice or remain silent.

Always remain respectful and avoid negative comments. Do not be too loud during the game (except when cheering for the teams). Keep your mobile phone as discreet as possible, except when taking photos. Stay until the end of the event – the players appreciate a full house. Even if your favorite team does not win, it shows good style to remain until the end of the event.

Enjoy these three days to the fullest and we would appreciate it if you also support the Styger Children's Foundation (lottery and auction), so that we can give back to children in Switzerland who are not on the sunny side of life. (see also the article in this issue).
