The basics of polo etiquette and good taste for our dear guests. The basics of polo etiquette – explained by Simone Styger.
Always well-dressed?
What should you wear when invited to a polo tournament? Many ask themselves this question, especially guests who have never visited us in Ascona. But let's start with a few general style rules from the world of polo:
Should you button the top button of a polo shirt?
Regardless of how many buttons your polo shirt has, always leave the top one or two buttons open and never leave them all open. (Exception: for women)
Ensure that the buttons do not go lower than the top edge of your armpits.
Collar up or down?
A classic in terms of style. In principle, whatever you like is allowed. Nevertheless, you should not pop the collar if you don't want to come across as a show-off or simply as someone who is "out of touch".
The preppy look is trendy again
The preppy style (derived from "preparatory schools") is a classic and elegant style, inspired by American university sports and the Ivy League, which is currently very trendy again. It is characterized by neat, high-quality, and timeless basics such as button-down shirts, chinos, cable-knit sweaters, and loafers. This look strikes a skillful balance between sporty casualness and formal elegance, and is generally well-suited for afternoon events. The new features lie in the rather oversized cuts as well as in unusual materials (e.g., terry cloth, Cool-Dry blends, etc.).
Wearing a cap with a polo shirt?
A cap can skillfully add a trendy touch to simple outfits. Often worn with sporty outfits, the cap also goes well with polo shirts. But here too, the rules of a successful style apply: no bold pattern mixing, no advertising, and always choose according to the occasion. For leisure, the cap completes the sporty look of the polo shirt; official occasions or professional obligations are not suitable for the cap and polo shirt combination. Otherwise, the rule is: only wear a cap with a polo shirt if it suits your style.
Shoes, Shoes, Shoes
Men like to wear loafers, moccasins, or elegant sneakers. Women opt for platform shoes, wedges, or flat shoes – high heels are rather frowned upon at a polo match, although in Ascona the game takes place on sand, which makes the classic "divot stomping" unnecessary.
Flashy or discreet?
Should I dress in a flashy way or is it better to remain discreet? For traditional tournaments, the rule is: opt for "Quiet Luxury", avoid overly loud outfits. And for women, wearing a hat is appreciated (traditional hat competition, although it is cancelled this year in Ascona).
Polo events are rather stylish events, generally without a strict dress code. In Ascona, it is naturally a bit more relaxed and you can afford to attract attention if you wish.
Ascona with dress code
During our 3-day event, there is a dress code for Friday evening (party) and Saturday evening (gala). On Friday, during the beach party, the dress code is "simply white". This does not represent a big challenge for most women and men, as everyone has a few light-colored pieces in their wardrobe.
Welcome to the Jungle!
On Saturday evening, this year's dress code is: "Welcome to the jungle!". This allows for a great deal of freedom of interpretation, and we are always surprised and delighted to see how creative our guests are in following the dress code.
That is why we have decided to create a jury for the first time, which will reward the three most wonderful outfits of the evening. So, whether you opt for a leopard costume or show up as Tarzan and Jane, there are no limits to your imagination. But the most important thing with a dress code: this is not a carnival party and you do not need to "dress up," but rather adapt the theme to your personal style. Your well-being during this special night is the top priority.
Etiquette
Your appearance is not the only thing that influences your presence; your behavior also plays a role. Here are some suggestions for etiquette so that all guests, players, and staff feel comfortable:
Arrive early, before the matches begin. This shows your respect for the players and the organizers, and you won't miss any of the action. Polo is a social sport. The event is therefore ideal for meeting new people and enjoying the company of others. Just remember how you would like to be treated. Small talk (chatting with strangers) is always positive. So, say something pleasant or remain silent.
Remain respectful at all times and refrain from making negative comments. Do not be too loud during the match (except to cheer for the teams). Keep your phone as discreet as possible, except for taking photos. Stay until the end of the event; the players appreciate a full tent. Even if your favorite team does not win, staying until the end of the event is a sign of good manners.
Enjoy these three days to the fullest and thank you for also supporting the Styger Kinderstiftung (raffle and auction), so that together we can give something back to children in Switzerland who are not on the sunny side of life. (see also the article in this issue).
