The artist and filmmaker Matto Barfuss is committed to the protection of cheetahs and biodiversity through his non-profit foundation Matto Barfuss Stiftung, established in 2025. At the Ascona Polo Cup, this commitment intersects with a tournament where respect for animals and a spirit of solidarity are firmly rooted. The foundation cooperates with the Cheetah Conservation Fund, focusing on Botswana.
There are guests whom we do not merely greet – they are awaited with enthusiasm. Matto Barfuss is one of those guests. The artist and filmmaker, whose heart has beaten for decades for the cheetahs of Africa, is part of the group of personalities who make the Ascona Polo Cup much more than a sporting event. After all, where horse and rider trust each other unconditionally at full gallop, where respect for the animal comes first and the philanthropic aspect is deeply rooted in the tournament's identity, that is where a person like Matto Barfuss feels at home.
From association to foundation – an idea gains greater dimension
The non-profit foundation Matto Barfuss Stiftung was established in 2025. It emerged from the association "Leben für Geparden e.V.", founded by Matto Barfuss in 1998, which dedicated itself for many years to the preservation of wild cheetahs. What began with the love for a single, fascinating species evolved into a much broader understanding: a species only survives if the entire breadth of global biodiversity is protected and preserved. It was from this perspective that the foundation was born – with a broader structure, expanded thinking, and the courage to plan for the long-term future.
